Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL)

In order to apply for accreditation of prior learning you will need to find the learning outcomes for the modules you have previously studied at another institution. In order to do this you will need to contact the institution directly, or alternatively look at the institutions website to see if this information is already listed.

Once you have located a copy of your previous learning outcomes, you will need to compare these to our equivalent programme. If there are a number of similar modules, you may be entitled to use the APL process, and gain exemptions toward your University of Essex Online degree.

If you believe that that you have certified learning equivalents to that required for relevant modules within your selected University of Essex Online course, you will need to provide evidence by sending the following:

  • Copies of your original transcripts showing the modules or units completed. This should be a formal transcript on headed paper.
  • Evidence from your previous institution, confirming that you have successfully completed the period of study on which your claim is based.
  • Learning outcomes or syllabus information describing the academic content of the course at the time it was studied.

Please note that if your prior learning was undertaken more than five years ago, you must also provide an up to date CV in order to evidence that you have kept your learning current.

If you have further questions or want to apply for a course through the APL process please call us on 0800 0527 526, or email enquiries@online.essex.ac.uk.
