I left school at 15 and started work in a clerical capacity. I had few qualifications and college was never considered as an option for me.
Over the next few years I moved from one job to the next with little progression. Having few qualifications not only hindered opportunity for career progression it also seemed to put me in a catch 22 situation of not being able to apply for better jobs which, it turn, reduced my confidence.
Within a few years I was an unmarried single parent. Whilst my son was young I worked part-time as a dinner lady. I did not enjoy this work but it paid the bills as my son’s father became disabled and was unable to provide any financial support to my son. As soon as I was able I went to evening classes to update my IT skills and returned to an office environment. In the back of my mind for many years I had a desire to study for a degree but had been deterred by the cost and lack of opportunity.

One day I received an e-mail that changed my life. It was the chance to apply for a scholarship to study online for a Foundation degree in Business and Management. I started the course with some trepidation but my confidence started to improve as I was enjoying the course and felt I was making real progress.
I was encouraged along the way by course tutors, student advisers and by regular online discussions with other students. In parallel, my increased confidence enabled me to progress in a management role in my organisation and my organisation was happy to sponsor me for the final year of the degree.
I also purchased my first home, a shared ownership property. I am really looking forward to obtaining my degree after the many evenings and weekends of studying. I am very proud of my achievement.
