Our incredible end of academic year results

17th Aug 2018

It’s hard to believe it’s already August! Another academic year has come and gone, and it’s been a pretty amazing one.

We wanted to share with you some of the incredible things that have happened for us over the past 12 months.

Our highlights

Our students

In the academic year 2017/18, we had 2007 students studying with us, and 976 new students have started studying with us in the past year, 51% of them are based in the UK, while the rest are international students from 101 different countries.

We had 454 finalists this year, including 125 who attended our graduation on 19 July at the University of Essex Colchester campus.

Our most popular courses are our business courses, with 37% of students starting a business course in 2017/18. The top month for starts was September. 57% of our students were aged 30 or above when they started their course.

Our institution

We’ve had a number of fantastic achievements this year. We were awarded a gold rating in the government’s Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework and are the only online provider to receive this ranking.

We received a 90% student satisfaction score in the National Student Survey 2018, well above the part-time average satisfaction of 85%. This placed us top in the UK for online-only Higher Education providers. Additionally our criminology department received an impressive 100% satisfaction ranking.

Meanwhile our awarding body, the University of Essex rose eight places in The Times and the Sunday Times Good University Guide to 22nd. It was also shortlisted for the Guide’s University of the Year.

Our funding and finance

For most people looking into further study, money is a key consideration. That’s why we’re excited about the three major additions to how our students can fund their studies.

Firstly, we were approved for postgraduate loans in England. Finally, we introduced new scholarships for international students, as well as an MBA scholarship. We are continuing to improve our scholarship offerings for the 2018/19 academic year.

Overall 121 students made use of a scholarship in 2017/18, with a further 217 taking advantage of an alumni or annual discount. In total, £387,413 worth of scholarships or discounts was awarded in 2017/18.

Our learning platform

Our virtual learning environment got a lot of use over the last year. Our students viewed over 7.1 million pages, and logged on from 191 different countries.

Students and tutors participated in about 2,400 live Q&A sessions, while our eBooks were used in almost a quarter of a million study sessions.

For people who aren’t our students yet, we’ve also introduced our new taster courses: short insights into how our online learning platform works.

Our courses

We are continuing to expand our course options, and in 2017/18 we announced 25 new courses.

Way back last August, we announced our new PG Cert Policing and Criminal Investigation course.

We expanded our postgraduate business options, with MSc Business with Finance, with Human Resources or with Marketing, and our MSc Project Management.

Our law and psychology departments have also expanded, with the introduction of numerous combined honours programmes: law with business, criminology or psychology, plus criminal psychology and business psychology.

We opened a new subject department with the announcement of our Master of Education programme.

And most recently, we have introduced healthcare management at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, although these courses are still subject to University approval.

Our future

We are already looking on with excitement to the 2018/19 academic year. Not only do several of our new courses have their first intakes this year, it’s also the start of our new MBA (and new £6,000 scholarship).

Will you be one of our 2018/19 students?
