Support from tutors and the student services team has been incredible.

When I moved to the UK from Nigeria in 2022, my goal was to further my studies in the healthcare field. I initially planned to study biomedical science full-time, but due to financial challenges, I had to pause my studies and work as a healthcare assistant for a while. Although my journey took a few unexpected turns, it became one of growth, resilience and rediscovery.

After two years working on the frontline, I saw many challenges within healthcare systems, as well as the transformative potential of technology in solving them. I realised that while I still wanted to contribute to healthcare, I could do so from a different angle; through artificial intelligence. AI is reshaping industries across the world, and I wanted to be part of that movement, bridging healthcare and innovation.

As a self-sponsored student, I needed a flexible option that would allow me to work full-time while studying. After researching several universities, I chose the University of Essex Online because of its strong reputation and supportive virtual learning environment (VLE). I was particularly drawn to the online MSc Artificial Intelligence, which welcomed students from non-technical backgrounds.

Balancing work and study can be challenging; however, I’ve made steady progress by dedicating a little time each day to my studies. The level of student support has been incredible. Whenever I’ve needed extensions or advice, they’ve been understanding and encouraging, which has helped me to stay motivated and focused. I’m also currently pursuing an internship and gaining practical experience in data science, which will help to boost my career prospects.

Looking ahead, I plan to advance into the medical technology and health technology sectors, where I can combine my healthcare and AI expertise. I’m passionate about driving research and innovation that improves patient outcomes. In the future, I also hope to pursue a second Masters in experimental medicine or surgery help bridge the gap between science, technology, and human care.

My journey so far has shown me that setbacks can lead to purpose and with determination, every challenge becomes a stepping stone toward something greater.
