Everyday Misogyny: Youth, Media Influence, and the Criminal Justice Response
Join us on Wednesday 29 April 2026 at 16.00 British Summer Time (BST).
As part of our LLB (Hons) Law with Criminology and MSc Criminology & Criminal Psychology programmes, our Law and Criminology academic team at Essex Online will be hosting an exclusive guest lecture on a very important and intriguing topic area.
This lecture will explore how misogyny is produced and normalised within everyday youth culture, particularly through digital media environments such as social media, influencer culture and online subcultures. It’ll examine how gendered attitudes are shaped through humour, banter and algorithmic amplification, while considering the relationship between online misogyny and real‑world harms, including harassment and violence against women. The session will also reflect on how the criminal justice system and wider institutions respond to gender‑based harm, and the challenges of addressing behaviours that have become culturally normalised rather than recognised as progressive.
About the speaker:
Nicole’s been with Essex Online since 2023. Driven by a strong commitment to justice, she was selected to lead the rollout of the 2025 prison application process within the Admissions Team, supporting the rehabilitation of UK prisoners.
She holds a BA (Hons) in Criminology with Law and an MSc in Forensic Psychological Studies, both completed through online learning. Having experienced the benefit of online learning first-hand, Nicole strongly values the accessibility and high standards that online education can offer to a diverse range of learners.
Nicole’s deeply passionate about social justice. Her MSc dissertation examined the extent to which sexism, internalised misogyny and gender stereotypes influence police decision-making and practices. Through online learning, she’s been given the opportunity to pursue her career in criminology. She now plays a vital role in the development and delivery of law and criminology courses for students studying with the University of Essex online, as well as UK offenders as part of their rehabilitation journey.
The lecture’s intended to be accessible and engaging, and will be relevant to students interested in criminology, media, youth culture, gender and justice. All students are welcome to attend, regardless of year of study or programme. This also includes prospective students who are looking to study a law and criminology degree at Essex Online.
This lecture will be also recorded and the recording will be distributed to those registered. You can register using the form below.
