New course just launched: BSc (Hons) Computer Science

The computing industry is constantly evolving as new technologies are developed and improved. Roles in this field are varied, using advances in technology to create solutions and inform higher level decision making. A recognised computing qualification can lead to opportunities in many industries, as you’ll gain the expertise required to succeed in this specialist field. 

In this blog, we introduce our latest undergraduate course, BSc (Hons) Computer Science, and where it could take you.  

What will I learn on the BSc (Hons) Computer Science?

Our BSc (Hons) Computer Science will teach you the fundamentals of programming, maths, statistics and algorithms. Each module will introduce the core topics of computer science, cyber security, artificial intelligence, data science and enterprise IT management. You’ll also explore emerging computer science trends, including the impact of artificial intelligence, and develop an understanding of how data algorithms generate insights to inform decision-making. Other topics include the role of data modelling in creating new systems, and common programming languages and hardware will also be covered throughout your studies.  

You’ll be taught by industry experts who ensure the latest theories and areas of study are covered in our courses and are proud to provide a high level of academic support. Upon completion of the course, you’ll have developed key research, problem solving and teamwork skills. You’ll also learn how to apply your in-depth knowledge and skills in a practical context, preparing you for an exciting career in computing. 

How does online study work?

You’ll study our BSc (Hons) Computer Science 100% online, part-time, allowing you to fit studying around your current commitments. You’ll also benefit from the opportunity to study wherever and whenever you like, as all course content is accessible 24/7, thanks to our state-of-the-art virtual learning environment (VLE). Modules include multimedia lecturecasts, made up of written content, short videos, animations and infographics, as well as engaging mini-assignments and tests. 

Throughout your studies, you’ll work on projects alongside your peers in preparation for a collaborative role in computer science. You’ll also share ideas through discussion forums, live seminars and Q&A sessions with your tutors, benefiting from the global perspectives of your fellow students. 

Our dedicated Student Support team will be with you every step of the way, providing support throughout your academic journey. You’ll also have access to the Study Skills team, who are available to help you build up your academic skills such as referencing, structuring an essay, planning your assignments and using the eLibrary.  

What are the entry requirements?

We offer two different entry routes, considering your prior work experience and relevant qualifications, as we know many people from non-traditional backgrounds would succeed on our courses. For our academic entry route, you’ll need three A levels or equivalent. And for our work experience entry route, you’ll need GSCE Maths and English at grade C or above, or equivalent and at least three years’ experience within the fields of IT, computer science or business.

Where can the BSc (Hons) Computer Science take me?

As the world becomes increasingly reliant on technology, the knowledge you’ll gain throughout your studies can be transferred across a variety of roles. These include IT consultant; business, cyber security or information systems analysts; data analyst, scientist or administrator; cloud analyst, developer or engineer; software tester or engineer; web designer or developer; and DevOps analyst.  

Alternatively, further your education with a postgraduate computing degree such as our MSc Computer Science, MSc Artificial Intelligence, MSc Data Science, or MSc Cyber Security. A Masters degree will help hone your practical skills and deepen your technical knowledge across a range of computing topics, while building on key leadership qualities.  

Looking for a shorter course?

The study duration of our BSc (Hons) Computer Science is 4 years. If you’re looking for a slightly shorter course, we’ve launched the CertHE Computer Science which has a study duration of 16 months.  You’ll gain a valued professional qualification which can be used as a stepping stone towards the full Bachelors degree in the future.
