Is my degree “value for money”?

Coins and a bank note on a table

Are you trying to work out whether a degree from University of Essex Online is ‘worth it’?

The definition of ‘good value’ or ‘value for money’ varies according to each individual, but the objective description is “a fair return or equivalent in goods, services, or money for something exchanged”1.

It’s easy to calculate the value of a material purchase like a car or a camera, but it’s much more difficult to determine the value of something abstract like a degree or qualification. So if you’re trying to weigh up the pros and cons of studying online with us, we’d advise you to consider the following factors:

How much does the course cost compared to other, similar programmes?

Education is a big investment, and something that requires a lot of planning and consideration. But rest assured, here at University of Essex Online our fees are extremely competitive when compared to other online and higher education institutions.

Our courses are also eligible for student loans, so undergraduate students living in England, Wales or the EU don’t have to pay any tuition fees up front and can instead apply for a tuition fee loan to cover the cost of their studies.

If you’re considering postgraduate study, or you’re not eligible for a tuition fee loan, we also have a range of payment options; this includes the option to pay monthly or you can take advantage of the 10% discount we offer if you decide to pay for each level of your course up-front.

In addition, we offer a range of discounts and scholarships that many students can take advantage of.

And finally, we want to give everyone the opportunity to experience a University of Essex Online course; we think you’ll love it! But if you decide it’s not for you within the first 21 days then you’ll receive a full refund.

What support do I receive during my studies?

Entering into higher education can be a daunting prospect for anyone; almost every student will have new skills to learn and we understand that it’s vital everyone has easy access to support and information when they need it.

That’s why each and every one of our students has a dedicated Student Adviser who is their first port of call and mentor throughout their studies. Our students also receive regular one-on-one support from their module tutors with a guaranteed 7-day turnaround for assignment results.

Another form of support we offer is our cutting-edge virtual learning platform. It allows students and tutors to actively take part in real-time conversations, listen to and view recorded lectures, and take part in live question and answer sessions. Our in-house technology team work hard to ensure the platform is always extremely intuitive and easy to use, meaning that you spend less time getting to grips with the process of studying online and more of your time actually learning!

What do I receive after I have completed my course?

After completing an undergraduate or postgraduate course with University of Essex Online, you’ll receive a degree validated by the University of Essex.

All of our students are also invited to attend graduation at the University of Essex’s Colchester campus. This prestigious day allows you to celebrate your achievement with family and friends exactly as a campus student would, and also gives you the chance to wear your hard-earned mortarboard and robes.

And if you’re one of our many students that decides to continue your education, we’ll also offer you a very generous alumni discount.

What benefits can I expect to receive in the long term?

The material benefits of education are clear, increasing students’ chances of a workplace promotion and increasing salary expectations by up to £500,000!

Harder to quantify, though still just as important, are the transferable skills you’ll also develop. These include the ability to organise, research, listen, budget and many, many more. These oft-forgotten ‘bonus’ skills make you a better student while you’re still studying, and equip you for work in almost any industry or profession.

So whether you want to study law, business, health or criminology, an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification will open doors to careers and opportunities in almost any industry around the world.

How is my qualification perceived by employers and around the world?

Any degree, but particularly a part-time degree, shows future employers that you are a dedicated and hard-working candidate. Our graduates also benefit from the excellent reputation of the University of Essex itself.

The University of Essex is an award-winning university, with a 50-year heritage of teaching and research excellence. It was ranked 2nd out of all mainstream universities in the National Student Survey 2015 and is ranked best in the UK for their politics research. The University is also top 5 in the UK for social science research and top 20 in the UK for research excellence2.
