Studying online provides flexibility and enables you to balance existing commitments while taking the next steps in your career. What’s more, you can access our virtual learning environment 24/7 anywhere in the world. In this blog post, we unpack everything you need to know about how online study works.

Where will learning take place?

Everything takes place in our innovative virtual learning environment (VLE). From here, you’ll access interactive lecturecasts, seminars, live Q&A sessions and much more. The University of Essex eLibrary is also available to support your learning with a wide range of textbooks and academic journals. For assessments, you’ll submit written assignments, participate in discussion forums, complete reflective journal entries and engage in group work.

Can I catch up when it suits me?

Whether you’ve had to jump into a last-minute meeting at work or do the school run, you can relax knowing the lecturecasts will be available to access at any time. Rewatch or reread the content as many times as you like. Worried about missing live sessions? All the sessions are recorded and sent out afterwards. Tutors also run virtual office hours where you can ask any questions.

Studying online has allowed me to grow professionally while being present for my family, despite my busy schedule.

What opportunities are there to connect with other students?

Studying online opens the door to global networking. During your course, you’ll build connections with fellow professionals from across the world, take on new perspectives and gain a global outlook. Discussion forums will help you build confidence and put your ideas forward. What’s more, you can message other students online, chat with tutors and interact on social media.

Is there anything else to know about online learning?

There are a few qualities that can help you excel when it comes to online learning. These include communication, self-motivation, organisation and commitment. If you don’t have them already, then over time you’ll develop the skills to prioritise study time alongside other responsibilities and find a routine that works for you. The best part is that on completion, you’ll get to graduate in-person at the University of Essex’s picturesque Colchester campus and celebrate your achievement!

In a nutshell, why should I choose to study online?

Studying online provides better flexibility and work-life balance, as well as the opportunity to build connections across the globe. You’ll receive a certificate from the University of Essex, placed in the top 25 UK universities (Guardian University Guide 2025) which will help you stand out in a crowded graduate market. As the UK’s leader in 100% online higher education courses, you’ll enjoy a first-class education from anywhere in the world.
