The modern business world is rapidly evolving, putting pressure on managers to be flexible, dynamic and focused in order to keep their company relevant and competitive. Those focused on evolution and adaptability are managing to flourish within this environment.

Our Master of Business Management degree is designed to prepare you for this new environment with a particular focus on leadership, marketing, and finance. You also have the choice to customise your studies with a range of optional modules, tailoring your course to suit your interests and desired career path.

In this blog we will give you more information about the module content, course length, and future employment opportunities. You’ll be able to decide if this is the right programme for you to take your career and take your career forward and make a difference to your company’s future.

Who should study this course?

The flexible, modern nature of the course and the skills and knowledge you develop are relevant for a range of business professions and other occupations. It is particularly relevant if you are looking to pursue routes towards upper management or to enhance your leadership skills. The course is delivered 100% online, giving you the flexibility to study while you continue to work full-time, so it’s ideal for a busy professional who doesn’t have the time to take a career break.

What do I learn first?

During your first module you will be introduced to some of the main principles and practices of contemporary management and organisational behaviour. This will be encouraged through a combination of lectures and working in small groups, where you will explore case studies of management in action. The overall module aim is to help you develop a thorough understanding of the role of managers within a wider political and economic context.

You will then move on to further enhance your knowledge from the first module by studying a range of practical managerial skills, underpinned by leadership theory. You will cultivate a reflexive interpretation of the characterisation of leadership in practice within organisations and their own personal development.

How will I be assessed?

Rather than facing the stress of revising for and then sitting exams, all assessment is carried out through the completion of assignments. This could be through engaging in discussion forums throughout your modules, completing reflective journal entries, or by submitting longer written assignments.

What if I want to study something shorter?

Then maybe either our PG Cert or PG Dip Business Management courses might be more suited to you. The PG Cert has an indicative duration of 8 months and the PG Dip has an indicative duration of 16 months. These are both respected qualifications which can enhance your CV and highlight your proficiency in this area of business. And if you choose to, it is easier to continue your studies to a Masters level after you complete one of these short courses.

Can I tailor my studies?

Yes, you can! One of the benefits of this course is the option to tailor the modules you study in line with both your desired career route and your interests. Dependent on the modules you choose you might look into:

  • Managing Across Cultures
  • Project Management
  • Human Resource Management
  • Business Strategy

Each of these modules has been designed to help you develop practical knowledge and skills to help you excel in your chosen area of business and management.

Towards the end of your degree you will have the opportunity to choose a particular area of management to investigate for your final Business and Management Report. You can select a topic that is directly relevant to your current workplace or your future career aspirations, allowing you to demonstrate your expertise in this niche area.

How will this help my career?

A postgraduate qualification is an excellent way to showcase to companies that you possess advanced knowledge and skills within business. This will help you to stand out in the job market and progress to senior and managerial positions. The skills and knowledge you learn are also transferable for a range of professions within business management, banking, insurance, accountancy, finance, marketing, sales, retail and human resources.

What are the benefits of online learning over campus-based?

All our programmes are delivered 100% online and part-time. As a result, you have the flexibility to study where and when is best for you. You have the opportunity to work and learn at the same time, gaining a new qualification without the need for a career break.

All course content, study materials, and assessment submissions are available and completed through our sophisticated Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). This removes the need to visit a physical library or purchase additional textbooks as these are all available through our extensive eLibrary.

Your interactive lecturecasts will be available through the VLE which also hosts live Q&A seminar sessions and immersive discussion forums. All you need to complete your studies is a good internet connection.

Once your studies are completed you are invited to attend a graduation ceremony at the University of Essex’s Colchester campus. This is a great way to celebrate your success with friends, family, classmates and your tutors.
