I was immediately struck by how easy it is to navigate the virtual learning environment (VLE) and was impressed with the multitude of learning resources and support available.

I’m originally from South Africa and moved to London 28 years ago to study classical music. After attaining my BMus (Hons) degree, I both performed and taught violin and piano. However, during the Covid pandemic I wanted to change my career and that’s when my interest in law began.

I was unsure whether it would be possible to incorporate the study hours, seminars and assignments into my busy lifestyle, due to having two children and family responsibilities. After extensive research, I opted to begin my law journey by completing a CertHE Law with the University of Essex Online. This was a fantastic way to delve into the subject and simultaneously ascertain whether studying online was the right path for me.

One of the many advantages of studying online is the freedom to study when it suits me. I can plan my time effectively because the structure of the course clearly indicates seminar and assignment dates far in advance.

Despite being online, I’ve never felt isolated during my study journey. The tutors conduct fortnightly live seminars and are consistently available to offer guidance. Legal debate and discussion are actively facilitated throughout the course and I have thoroughly enjoyed the group participation.

I’ve seamlessly progressed onto the LLB (Hons) Law and I’m currently engrossed in my final year modules. I particularly enjoy studying Family Law which is the subject area I hope to pursue professionally.

At the time of starting the BA, I was 18 years old, and in my last year of college. It would have been really tough to access a campus-based university over an online study option.

While a 9-to-5 office job is the norm in Hong Kong, I realised it wasn’t right for me and decided to switch career paths during the pandemic.
