What is the British Psychological Society?

The British Psychological Society (BPS) is a registered charity which acts as the representative body for psychology and psychologists in the UK. It is responsible for promoting excellence and ethical practice in the application, education and science of the discipline. Accreditation is a mark of quality that employers understand and value. It gives assurance that the course includes content relevant to meet the requirements of the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership Curriculum.

In order to be eligible for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) with the BPS, you must gain at least a Lower Second-Class (2:2) Honours degree overall, and pass the Final Psychology Project with a minimum mark of 40%.

Completing an accredited psychology programme demonstrates that a high-level standard of education has been met. If you meet the criteria for eligibility as stated before, then you will be able to apply for graduate membership of the BPS.

Graduate membership is an important first step for your career as a qualified psychologist and is a prerequisite for many BPS accredited postgraduate and doctoral programmes. Without it you will not be able to complete society-accredited postgraduate and professional study.

What can you expect studying our BSc (Hons) Psychology?

Our BSc (Hons) Psychology is one of the few 100% online degrees accredited by the BPS. On this course you can delve into the scientific and theoretical underpinnings of psychology as well as several specialised areas.

Throughout this course you will explore a broad range of topics, from the principles of psycho- and pharmacotherapeutics in the treatment of mental health, to the role of memory as the mediator of cognitive processes. Towards the end of your studies you will build on the research skills you’ve acquired through a final project on a psychology topic which personally interests you.

The online mode of study makes it convenient to study at any time and anywhere in the world. You can access learning materials 24/7 and will be assessed online too – so no need to travel to assessment centres! Though you will study 100% online, on successful completion of your course you’ll be invited to graduate at the University of Essex’s Colchester campus.

 

What are the future career paths with a BPS accredited degree?”

If you’re planning to become a professional psychologist, you will need to do further postgraduate training, and completing our BSc (Hons) Psychology will enable you to do that. You can opt to train in specialist areas such as clinical, educational, forensic, health or occupational psychology.

This course is still valuable even if you’re just interested in psychology as a subject and don’t want to pursue a career as a psychologist. It helps you to develop skills that are desired for careers in education, health or management. You might also want to consider our non-accredited psychology courses which allow you to combine your studies with either business or criminology.
