This International Nurses Day (IND), we’re celebrating the commitment of nurses across the world whose invaluable contributions make nursing what it is today. Read on to learn how IND is celebrated and where our nursing courses could take you.
What is International Nurses Day?
IND is marked worldwide on 12 May to commemorate the birth of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. The annual event celebrates nursing professionals around the globe who work tirelessly caring for individuals, families and communities. This year, the theme is ‘Our Nurses. Our Future. The economic power of care.’
How is International Nurses Day celebrated?
IND is celebrated globally with the sharing of educational resources to bring awareness to the nursing profession. In the UK, we have a dedicated service held in London, where a symbolic lamp is passed between nurses to represent the sharing of information. Join in and spread the word on social media, using the hashtag #IND2024.
Who was Florence Nightingale and why was she an important figure?
Florence Nightingale was a British nurse and leading social reformer who served in the Crimean War, where she was known for driving up the standards of medical care for patients. She was a trailblazing figure in the nursing world who had a lasting influence on the quality of healthcare in the 19th and 20th centuries, right up to the modern day.
