As a member of the first cohort of students taking this course, I’ve been blown away by the benefits.

As a child, I had a keen interest in seeing how things worked. I would tinker with gadgets, explore every corner of my computer’s operating system, code websites for my own interest and consume copious amounts of sci-fi to admire the world of tomorrow.

My A-levels in English literature, psychology and business studies would normally be a barrier to pursuing a science-based degree. But I found that entry on to the BSc (Hons) Cyber Security at the University of Essex Online transparent and perfectly suited to my academic background.

Cyber securitys a field thats been gaining momentum with every passing decade. With developments in technology and AI, it’s an area that the UK government is investing in heavily. This course is designed to help students work at a pace that fits around their schedule, while learning technical skills that employers value.

As a member of the first cohort of students taking this course, I’ve been blown away by the benefits. The virtual learning environment (VLE) is well-structured, theres regular communication and my classmates provide a great support system Plus, it’s more affordable than a campus-based degree and I have the flexibility to study from anywhere in the world.

Whether you’re a recent school leaver, a working professional or someone looking to reskill with a second degree, this course is a great way to gain the skills you’ll need for a career in tech. My own long-term goal is to progress into leadership roles within governance, risk and compliance (GRC), where I can use my studies to combine my technical expertise and strategic oversight.

If I could speak to my younger self, hed be amazed by how I study on a tablet just like the characters from his favourite sci-fi shows. Thanks to this course, I can study in the world of tomorrow…today!

I set out to earn a living instead of studying, but despite this choice I always wanted to fulfil my ambition to have a qualification.

I was looking after children who had fled armed conflict. It was here that I was convinced Public Health was the way to go to progress my career.

At the time of starting the BA, I was 18 years old, and in my last year of college. It would have been really tough to access a campus-based university over an online study option.
