Choosing the University of Essex Online has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It’s allowed me to pursue two dreams simultaneously.
As a dedicated dressage rider, I spend several hours each day at the stables – training, looking after my horse and preparing for future competitions. Riding isn’t just a hobby for me; it’s a major commitment and an important part of my identity. But I’ve always known I wanted to build a strong academic foundation alongside my sporting career.
Having a backup plan has always been essential to me, not because I doubt my passion, but because I value security, personal development and long-term opportunities. However, the structure of the equestrian world is very demanding and training hours or competitions can shift from week to week. This meant moving to a new location for a traditional on-campus degree was never an option for me and I needed a study model that could adapt to my lifestyle. This is why I chose to study with the University of Essex Online.
The university immediately stood out to me because it offers flexibility without compromising on academic quality, which is exactly what I needed. The virtual learning environment (VLE) is intuitive and well-organised. From the moment I enrolled, I felt supported and encouraged. The course tutors are highly approachable and genuinely invested in student progress. Despite studying remotely, I’ve never felt isolated. Instead, I feel like I’m part of a strong, motivated academic community.
What I appreciate most is that the University of Essex Online enables me to fully commit to my dressage training while also working towards a recognised academic qualification. I can study early in the morning before going to the stables, or later in the evening after training – whichever suits me best. This flexibility has allowed me to grow personally, academically and athletically at the same time.
I chose to study an online BA (Hons) Business and Management because the course provides a wide range of career opportunities and aligns with my long-term goals. Whether I decide to work in the business world, develop my own projects, or connect my knowledge with the sports and equestrian industry, the degree gives me a solid and versatile foundation. I can already see how much the course is helping me; I’ve become more structured, analytical and confident in managing both my studies and sport.
This experience has enabled me to excel in a sport I love, all while building a strong academic and professional future. I hope my journey encourages others to see that a demanding sport and a university degree can absolutely go hand in hand.
