"The further along I was in the course, the more I knew how to overcome my challenges" - Dariusz talks about finishing his LLB

Our undergraduate law courses were launched in 2015, which means that this year we saw our first LLB Law graduates at graduation in Colchester.

We had a chance to catch up with Dariusz Paleczny, LLB, to speak to him about his experiences studying law online.

Why did you choose to study online?

The main reason was flexibility. Working full time and studying online is the only option that allows you to flawlessly pursue all your career goals and study in the meantime, not being tied to one place and scheduled classes.

What was the biggest challenge you faced when studying?

It is quite funny because the biggest challenge is also the biggest advantage. From one angle you can continue with your all duties, but at the same time it can be challenging to accommodate additional time for studying. I think personally that the biggest challenge is at the beginning when you have to find your own way of studying – whether you like to study on your way to work, during the evening or maybe during the night-time when everyone at home is asleep.

Studying online teaches discipline, and this is an additional challenge. You have to be disciplined, or learn how to be, as there is no one telling you that you have to study two, three or five hours today. The deadline is there, and you have to be ready.

Whether you are disciplined or not, it does not matter, because this is the best way to learn how to do it. Tutors helped me to learn how to manage my time. They and the whole staff were always there if I needed them. The first few months were probably the most challenging, but the further along I was in the course, the more I knew how to overcome my challenges and where to look for the answers.

What did you enjoy most?

Not to sound too cliché, but I think I can really say everything! Starting with the most important: I am really glad about what I have learnt. Secondly is how I have learnt, and that I have done it working full-time. I met some great people, my fellow students, and I had great support from the tutors. Flexibility gives tremendous possibilities, but of course it does not come without sacrifice. Like any studying, it requires a lot of effort and time, but most importantly I was in charge of when I was going to study.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

Ha! This is a very good question! I thought at a certain age I would know the response but I do not. What I do know is that I apply everything that I have learnt on a daily basis as it is extremely useful in my day-to-day life. Being honest, I am considering continuing my studies, but first I definitely need a short break.

How was the graduation ceremony?

The graduation ceremony was definitely the cherry on the top of a cake. It was a fantastic moment of celebration of the effort we all made through the last few years. It was also a great opportunity to meet the other students and tutors, finally face-to-face.
