There are many things the course taught me that have been invaluable in my career so far.

Back in July 2022, I remember excitedly picking up my degree certificate Id worked so hard on for the past four years. During that time, Id been working a full-time job and dedicated my evenings and weekends to studying an online, part-time degree in BA (Hons) in Business and Marketing.

I feel very grateful for studying my degree with the University of Essex Online; one of the reasons was the fact I was able to secure a job as a content strategist nine months before I officially graduated! Firstly, my course gave me a lot of confidence in my writing and research abilities. We had many assignments which needed credible sources and we also had to know how to conduct thorough research. This helped me develop the skills I could transfer to my current job.

Other modules focused on leadership, employee morale, and the vital links between different business departments. The course also explores different subjects such as leadership styles and because of this, I was able to think about the kind of leader I want to become.

So far it has led me well, as I consistently receive great feedback from my peers and in performance reviews. I really appreciate how my degree examined all areas of business, not just marketing. This has helped me to understand the business as a whole and gave me the ability to collaborate and focus on growth as a team.

With the support from great tutors I had during that time, I was able to apply my learning to my job and become a leader in my team. Due to this, I was then promoted to Assistant Manager of Content Strategy in August of 2022, which I’m currently working as. Throughout the course, we had to self-reflect and set goals using the SMART method. These exercises helped me to improve in my current role, in ways such as asking for feedback, reflecting on my own work and looking for ways to improve.

As I was past the traditional university age, it took me a while to decide whether I wanted to study for a degree – and I knew it would be a big time commitment alongside full-time work. But then a year passed and I realised I could’ve been a year into my studies by now! That’s when I took the leap and decided to sign up to study with the University of Essex Online.

It truly was the best decision I couldve made as my degree helped me advance in my career and brought me closer to my long-term goals.

I was surprised to find out that you can gain your LLB via distance learning – and that it carries the same value as an LLB qualification gained on campus.
