This field can be challenging to master, and this short postgraduate course gives an insight into the key methods a manager can use to analyse data and make decisions concerning it.

The applications of this degree can be used across departments such as finance, customer service, business development, marketing and more, and the skills developed will help you improve as a manager as well as a data analyst.

Over eight months, this course explores key topics within management and analytics including:

  • financial decision-making in the short and long term

  • the applications of statistics in contemporary management and decision making

Once you have completed your course, you have the opportunity to advance onto a PG Dip or full Masters degree in business analytics.

Teaching methods

Studying online gives you the freedom to study when and where it suits you – at home, during your lunch hour or anywhere else you have internet access.

Our courses are delivered through a virtual learning environment (VLE) instead of a traditional campus. This means you will have access to your study materials 24/7, including:

  • multimedia lecturecasts made up of written content, short videos, animation, audio recordings, infographics, short tests and mini-assignments
  • discussion forums for you to chat about the course content with fellow students
  • live Q&A sessions with your tutors
  • a comprehensive eLibrary of textbooks and academic journals
  • support from academic staff and your personal Student Adviser

To ensure you receive the support you need from your tutor, we cap our class sizes at 20 students.

Assessment methods

Rather than fretting about exams, you will be assessed exclusively through assignments. This can be by engaging in discussion forums throughout your modules, completing reflective journal entries, or by submitting longer written pieces.

We are committed to providing frequent and transparent feedback through the following ways:

  • Our assessment criteria are designed to be simple and transparent.
  • You will always be aware of your current provisional grade, right from the start of the programme.
  • You will be able to view your marks clearly in your gradebook whenever you log onto the learning platform.
  • There is a 7-day turnaround for marking and feedback of assessed work.
  • You will have regular contact with your Student Adviser, with whom you can discuss any concerns as soon as they arise.

Study duration

Our PG Cert Business and Management (Business Analytics) course has an indicative study duration of 8 months which is a guide to how long your course will take to complete. The actual duration may be longer or shorter depending on your speed of study, study options chosen and module availability.

It’s possible to complete your studies faster than the indicative course duration by doubling up on modules at certain times; however, minimum study durations do apply.

Our academic year is organised into modules, typically with a one- or two-week break between modules and a structured three-week break for the Christmas period. Students will receive a course timetable during the application process.

All of our courses have regular start dates throughout the year.

On successful completion of your degree, you will be invited to attend a graduation ceremony at the University of Essex, Colchester Campus.

This degree is ideal for anyone looking to bring a solid grounding in data analysis to their future career, whether within their capacity as a manager, business owner or C-level executive, or within a data specific role such as data officer, finance analyst, marketing analyst or more. With businesses increasingly relying on the data they gather to serve their customers better than their competitors do, the skills and knowledge gained will be invaluable to any growing business.

Andy Robertson - BA (Hons) Business and Management (Top-up)

Being a naval chap, I thought that I was a broad, adaptable, comfortable manager. However, as a mature student, the vagaries and pressures of work take priority and zap your energy, making the balance beyond work, between family and study even more precarious. In maintaining the balance between work, study and home life, I learned that one has to set aside a period known as the “study period” and sacrifice being idle! Giving up free time simply means giving up time without purpose, a really neat trick of useful time management. And when in doubt, I sought the great bunch of tutors and student advisers at University of Essex Online.

Aisha Legge - Essex Online MBA

I wish I’d started my MBA years ago. I feel like I’m part of a community. I created a WhatsApp group for students based in the UAE and we physically meet up regularly. If I can’t watch any lectures live because of the time difference I can watch them on demand and our tutors try to be flexible with their office hours. Even though we’re miles away from the Essex team, they’re always willing and able to help with any issues or questions I have. My student adviser, Marie, replies promptly, is always able to assist me and offers support in my studies. My hope is that my MBA will help with career advancement and open doors to opportunities with potential employers in the future. Read more from Aisha on our blog.

Paul Nicholson - BA (Hons) Business and Management

I was a project leader in the oil and gas industry, wanting to take my career to the next level. Learning through an online programme provided me with the flexibility I needed to manage my work and family life. Studying in the evenings and at weekends worked well for me, but without the support and understanding of my wife and daughter, it could have been very difficult. Summer holidays saw me sitting in air-conditioned rooms writing assignments while my family entertained themselves. I would say family ‘buy-in’ and support is crucial to succeed! However, while I've made sacrifices, I'll definitely reap the rewards in the long term.
