We asked new project management student Kairat Kabashev to share his career journey and study experience with us.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
My name is Kairat and I am from Kazakhstan. I am married and have two children. I like to travel and study the culture and customs of different nationalities. My favourite hobby is collecting coins and stamps from different countries.
What course are you studying and why did you choose to study the subject?
I am currently studying an MSc Project Management. I have been working at an oil and gas company for over ten years. Progressing through a variety of departments I have gained good experience in the oil sector. Then I decided to further my knowledge by getting an education in project management.
Why did you decide to study online?
I’ve never doubted that I would study at one of the universities in England – it was simply a matter of timing. My wife advised me to study online with the University of Essex Online. The online learning mode is very convenient in both saving time and not being far away from family and work. It also provides a very comfortable and flexible study pattern.
How did you find the enrolment process?
Each student has their own Admission Adviser from the beginning, coordinating the entire process of enrolment. Stacey, my Adviser, was excellent – language and time difference were not an issue.
Then I was introduced to my Student Support team. They act as a mentor and helps me with my studies. I can approach them for advice on how to better schedule assessments and tasks. I can also discuss my personal issues that might interfere with my studies and they try to help.
How are you finding the Virtual Learning Environment?
I find the virtual learning environment to be a convenient, informative, and practical tool. It contains many different functions, not only for learning, but also for communication with fellow students and tutors.
All tutors have office hours which means I can contact them at assigned times with questions and get a detailed answer from them then. I have never had problems with time to complete an assignment. The tutors tell us when we need to pay attention to specific things and always give adequate notice of deadlines.
What do you want to do with your course?
It is a new step for me to obtain the next level in my career. I intend to gain specialist knowledge of project management and use it effectively in an international company. The project management industry has a reasonably wide range of opportunities.
What advice would you give someone considering online study?
I researched other online universities, considering factors such as study mode, tuition fee and ranking. Without hesitation I would advise others to choose the University of Essex Online. What attracted me to the University is the incomparable and invaluable human factor, the institution and the staff.
